Reception Admissions 2021-22

Welcome to St John’s

Applying for a place for your child to start school is an exciting time – but it can also be a daunting one. You will be looking ahead to the next seven years of your child’s life, considering which school you think would suit them best, and perhaps feeling uncertain about the application process.

This year, when schools are closed to visitors and Open Events have largely been cancelled, we know the process is more daunting than usual. At St John’s, we are keen to do everything we can to help. We have put together some resources on this page to give you more information about the school and to explain the application process.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, we are always happy to answer them. Please contact our Admissions Manager, Mrs Catherine Taylor, on 01892 678980 ext. 206 or by email at

All about us

In a normal year we really look forward to welcoming prospective parents to St John’s. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, we are not able to run any Open Events at the present time. Although we realise that online information is never a perfect substitute for visiting a school in person, we hope that the presentations below help to give you a really good flavour of what St John’s is all about.

  • Prospective Parents’ Presentation: this will give you a good overview of the school and an introduction from our Headteacher, Mr Dan Turvey.
  • New Reception Entrants Transition’ video: this is a short film we put together for the current year’s new starters, which gives a really good insight into what life in Reception is like for children at St John’s. The video was created by Ginger Cat Studios ( / Facebook @gingercatstudios).
  • Photo Slideshow: this has lots of lovely pictures to give you an in-depth feel for our school site and community.

You can also find lots more information about all aspects of the school on our website, so please do take some time to explore.

How to apply for a place

All applications for Reception places need to be made through Kent County Council. It’s easiest to apply online using this link, although a paper form is also available. Applications opened on 5th November 2020 and closed on 15th January 2021. If you have missed the deadline, please contact KCC for further information about submitting a late application for a reallocation place. For a summary of the application process, please see the following KCC application poster.

We have put together a list of Reception Application FAQs to help you through the application process. This includes information about distances and admissions criteria, plus some tips for how to complete your application form – please see below.

What happens next?

Kent County Council will send out primary school offers by email on 16th April 2021. Once you receive your offer, the first step will be to contact your offered school directly to accept your place. If your child has been offered a place at St John's, we will then be in touch with more information about how to provide address evidence and the next stages of the induction process. If you were unfortunately not offered a place at your preferred school, your email from KCC will contain information about how to join the waiting list of any of the schools you included on your application form.

How can I find out more?

Now you’ve had a chance to learn a bit more about St John’s, we do hope that you will consider applying for a place for your child to join us. If you have any queries about the school or the application process, please get in touch with our Admissions Manager, Mrs Catherine Taylor, on 01892 678980 ext. 206 or by email at Our Headteacher Mr Turvey is also very happy to speak to prospective parents on the phone; please contact Mrs Taylor in the first instance to arrange this.

As well as updating our website regularly, we also communicate directly with parents who have expressed an interest in a place at St John's, to keep them informed of any developments. If you would like to join our prospective parent database, please complete the Expression of Interest form below. Forms can be returned to Mrs Taylor either by email or post. Please note that this form is not an application - you will still need to apply for a place at the school via the KCC process.
