Term 5

ST JOHNS 4        ST JAMES 2

Match report written by Archie L

This match vs St James, was the first for the school football team since the lockdown started to lift. We only had 7 players because of injuries, so we thought it would be tough.

For the first goal Harrison dribbled down the left wing, played the ball inside to Billy who dribbled past another defender before playing a through ball into space for me to run onto, luckily I got to the ball before the keeper and slotted the ball round him and into the goal. 1-0 to St Johns!

Mere minutes later, we won a corner on the right side. Jackson ran over to take it and then crossed the ball perfectly, I jumped, got my head on it and it flew into the top corner for the second goal. 2-0! We were full of confidence.

St James won a corner on the far side. They crossed it in and a mix up saw it end up in our net. 2-1! St James had somehow got themselves back into the game, but we knew we were the better side. Even when they did get close to our goal, Tyler made some outstanding saves to keep us in it, we just had to keep going.

For our 3rd goal, I got the ball in midfield from defence and looked up, hoping for a good option to get us another goal. I saw Billy running past the opposition’s defence so I played a great pass with my left foot in between their players. Billy was calm and composed and smashed the ball beyond the keeper to make it 3-1!

Once again St James came back. Their centre midfielder played a good pass to their striker who, using his pace, ran through our defence and rounded Tyler. The ball rolled into the open net to make it 3-2. It was an end to end game.

As the game moved into the final minutes, Billy played a beautiful through ball to Jackson who shot but the keeper pushed it away with his foot. I thought the rebound would pass me, but somehow I managed to drag my foot behind and scrape it into the goal. Hat-trick hero!!! We were leading 4-2 now, we just had to hold on. It was an exciting end to an amazing victory for St Johns. We are a strong team and I can't wait for the next game.
