• Y5 Fieldwork day

  Year 5 enjoyed using their geography skills to investigate land use in Tunbridge Wells and the different types of houses in Cunningham Road.  Thanks to the parents who walked with us.

  

• Pentathlon on 20.06.19

  Last Wednesday some children from years 1 & 2 were invited to Tonbridge School to participate in a KS1 Pentathlon competition.  

  The children had great fun testing their throwing & jumping skills but particularly really enjoyed racing on the proper running track!  

  Each of them represented the School brilliantly and were very proud of themselves.

  

• Orchestra Workshop

  On Thursday 13 June, lots of local primary schools came to St. John's to take part in an Orchestra Workshop.  Members of Tunbridge Wells Symphony Orchestra worked with groups of children and then a full orchestral rehearsal took place.  The orchestra involved 90 children and around 30 adults.  They sounded fabulous!

  

• Tag Rugby

  On 12 June, St. John’s tag rugby squad competed in a tournament at St. Mark’s rugby grounds. There were 20 teams in the Year 6 tournament, some schools sending multiples of up to 4 teams;

  St. John’s only sending  1. We had a pristine start, winning our first 2 games against Beechwood and Claremont A. On the 3rd  game, it was a seesaw of tries. Walking away with a 6-6 draw, we needed a good result to qualify for the major finals however our toughest game was next - Bishop’s Down. With the final 30 seconds to go we were 5-4 down, we needed a try! With a final run through, a dive for a point was taken… an unintentional tackle stopped it and fortunately a penalty try was given. It was a 5-5 draw. As we sat nervously biting our nails for the result of Bishop’s Down’s final game, we realised we were through to the majors. As we came first in the pool, we could compete for the cup. Next up was our semi-final, we were in a tragic situation losing 4-1 down but miraculously coming back with 4 tries leaving us with a hot win. Now that’s a comeback!  A final against Claremont awaited with our name written all over it. As they took a lead by 1 point we came back by 8 tries. WOW! Walking off the pitch, we celebrated triumphantly with our head coach Miss. McLaren.

  We had won the tournament!

• Y3 Egyptian Day

  Year 3 enjoyed an Ancient Egyptian experience which we learnt a lot from. We experienced making bandages for mummies, canopic jars out of clay, salt dough bread, soap carving and perfume as well as a eating a sumptuous banquet in the afternoon with entertainment such as the Dance of the Wax Crocodile. During the afternoon the children were either the entertainers as dancers, actors or mime artists or they acted the part of the slaves serving the food. Some of the children formed part of the Pharaoh's entourage and were the Pharaoh, his Queen and royal food tasters. Year 3 were totally immersed in the day and really looked the part in their amazing costumes. We are very thankful to the PFA as we used our enrichment funding from them to pay for the day.

  

• School Summer Concert

  On Tuesday 11 June, our School Summer Music Concert took place.  The concert began (& ended) with massed choirs involving around 150 children from both key stages.  Soloists, ocarina and recorder players and choirs took to the stage and performed brilliantly.  There were many proud parents and teachers present!

  

• Year 4 Greek Day 2019

  Year 4 had an exciting visit to the agora in Ancient Athens. We started our day by hearing that the Persians had invaded Marathon and all the craftsmen had left the city. We were to be apprentices for the day – we learnt to make charms, pots, wax tablets and carve soap.

  After lunch, we rehearsed some plays, poems and created a Greek dance. We then performed during a luxurious feast. It was an amazing experience and one that we will never forget.
